Darling Point suburb profile
Just 3km east of the CBD, the exclusive peninsula suburb of Darling Point was named in honor of Governor Darling’s wife (it was originally known as Mrs Darling’s Point).
This peaceful, leafy enclave has its origins dating back to the 1830s. It was graced with many grand homes from its inception, unlike many of its inner city counterparts such as Paddington which were lined with quaint terraces and cottages to house workers. While many of these gracious homes and elegant, character-filled low-rise apartment buildings remain, some towering apartment buildings have sprung up over the years as residents vie for a view of the harbour.
A number of Sydney’s most expensive properties inhabit this diminutive suburb. The Swifts on Darling Point Road is its most prominent residential landmark, a 56-room 1880s sandstone gothic revival mansion on 1.5ha which has been meticulously restored over the past years.
Darling Point itself has a local deli for all your day to day needs, however it’s conveniently close to the supermarkets, specialty stores and major bus and train interchange at the Edgecliff Centre. Neighbouring Double Bay is a cosmopolitan shopping hub full of exclusive boutiques and top restaurants.
A much-loved recreational haven, Rushcutters Bay Park sweeps around the picturesque Darling Point waterfront to the Cruising Yacht Club (CYC). This full service marina has a great restaurant where you can dine or enjoy a drink at the water’s edge with dramatic views of the city skyline.
A number of prestigious private schools are located nearby, reflecting the affluent nature of the area. These include Ascham and Kambala for girls, the co-ed Reddam House and the boys’ schools Scots College, Sydney Grammar and Cranbrook.
Buses run regularly along Darling Point Road, you can catch a ferry to the city from gorgeous McKell Park or jump on a train at Edgecliff Station. For all transport details in the area, visit the transport infoline website www.131500.com.au or phone 131 500.
